Symptoms of Autism

There are multiple signs of Autism, but they could be hard to spot. If you notice any unusual behavior in your child, it would be a good idea to get it checked out by a pediatrician. The following are signs of Autism . . .

No facial expression of joy by age 6 months or after

No speaking by 16 months of age

No "baby talk," or babbling, by 12 months of age

Loss of speech/social skills of any kind at any age

Child doesn't imitate others

What Autism is not

Autism sometimes gets confused with other disorders that have behaviors like it.

Tourette's Syndrome - Uncontrollable motor and/or vocal tics

OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) - Having an obsession with keeping things organized.

Asperger's Syndrome - Very similar to Autism, but language development is about normal.

Rett's Syndrome - Occurs only in girls. Most symptoms are associated with Autism.

Prosopagnosia - Unable to recognize faces.
